IICRC Water Damage Categories — What They Mean for Your Claim

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) classifies every water loss into three categories based on contamination level. Category directly drives the mitigation scope your insurer will approve — including which materials must be removed vs. dried in place. We assess and document category on arrival so there is no dispute later.

Category 1 — Clean Water

Broken supply lines, appliance overflow, sink overflow. Sanitary water source, minimal biological risk. Fastest dry-out timeline.

Category 2 — Gray Water

Dishwasher, washing-machine, or toilet-bowl overflow (urine only). Significant contamination — requires antimicrobial treatment and typically drywall/insulation removal.

Category 3 — Black Water

Sewage backups, rising flood water, and any water that has sat long enough to become grossly unsanitary. Requires full PPE, aggressive material removal, and post-remediation verification.

How Our Insurance Claim Process Works

1. 24/7 Emergency Response

Call (201) 686-8232 any hour. A crew is dispatched to stop the damage — water extraction, board-up, tarp, and containment — usually on-site within a few hours across NJ and PA.

2. Documentation for Your Insurer

We photograph and moisture-map every affected area, itemize damaged contents, and provide Xactimate-formatted estimates your adjuster can process without rework.

3. Direct Insurance Billing

We work directly with all major carriers — State Farm, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, Travelers, Chubb, and dozens more. You pay your deductible; we bill the balance to the carrier.

4. Mitigation & Rebuild

IICRC S500/S520 dry-out and remediation, followed by full reconstruction — framing, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, paint — so you deal with one contractor from loss to move-back.

One Contractor, Loss to Move-Back

Most restoration companies mitigate the loss and then hand you off to a separate general contractor for the rebuild — which is where projects stall for months and where scope disputes with your adjuster begin. Strong Construction handles the full sequence: emergency response, mitigation, structural drying, mold remediation when required, and complete reconstruction — drywall, flooring, cabinetry, trim, paint, and final punch — from a single crew accountable to a single project manager.

We provide Xactimate estimates, sworn statements of loss, and all supporting documentation your carrier requires. When adjusters push back on scope, we defend it with photographs, moisture maps, and IICRC citations. You get your home rebuilt to pre-loss condition (or better) without becoming a full-time claims manager.
